I'm trying to work out how to be more productive and not suffer from that rebellious teenager in terms of the 'to do' list. and this hits the nail on the head. but can I really put it into practice.... Although my daytime job is sewing frocks, I still like to do something "crafty" in the evenings whilst unwinding and watching the T.V. In the last couple of years this has been teaching myself to crochet,( the house is now full of crochet blankets!) and knitting ( socks being the preferred item) so this year I wanted to do something else, so it's sewing !!!! But this is different.I do now do quite a bit of hand sewing in my work.I used to hate it, but with age and therefore experience and hopefully a bit of wisdom, I've grown to love it. You can get such a good finish and it's very satisfactory.But this is just pure unadulterated hand sewing for pleasure. so I'm making a patchwork quilt. I've made them by machine before, but never a traditional hand sewn hexagon one. And it is a perfect to use up all those lovely scraps that I just can't seem to throw out, and those devine Kaffe Fassett pieces that I couldn't resist buying without a clue what I was going to use them for.... problem solved !!!Guess this sound's like I'm obsessed with sewing........ you could be right!!!!This also seems to act to shift that horrible feeling OF PROCRASTINATION. When I get stuck with my work and just can't seem to drag myself into the workroom, I tempt myself in with a bit of fun sewing for myself, and then once I'm in there I might as well get on with it. well it works for me :)

And these are for a couple of other projects that I'm finally getting round to.

Been in a bit of a "Blue funk" , work wise , this week. Had a dress to do and it simply wasn't working. Had a flash of inspiration last night.

so stripped the black fabric off the under dress, and changed the top fabric!!!

Now, obviously this isn't the finished garment, but I like to see the design process , so I thought you may like it too.

So it's September, and here in the UK, we have gone from Summer August to Autumn. It's windy and rainy , and I love it!!! not quite cold enough for Jumpers, but the nights are drawing in and I'm planning my next crochet blanket and a few knitting projects for dark evening by the fire.
I always get a feeling of change in September, and this year especially. things are changing and so is my hair!! it still needs a bit of toneing and tweaking ,it's lighter and more grey/violet in real life( can't get the right colours in the photos) but it's good so far.

so I've been playing around with hat designs. this is an original opera top hat , a bit battered , but it has the pop-up mechanism, so I've been using it for inspiration. I've been playing around with some lovely faux fur too. all will be revealed soon!!

I've finally got my hands on my dream sewing machine.... a singer 201k . built in 1950 in scotland.
I've had my eye on several on E-bay, but kept getting beaten on price. But fate was being kind to me.
Last week end we went to the Dorset Steam fair

they have a huge market selling a mind boggling selection of the strange and wonderful and tucked under a table, complete with it's own spiderwebs( and spiders!) was this beauty. for only £5.
She has the original case, extension table, metal box with the extra feet, manual and even the original screw driver.
I've stripped her down( not completely , but enough) cleaned her and oiled her and she's purring away.
These really are incredible machines, they cope with anything from chiffon to leather. my modern machine is great, lots of fancy stitches and wonderful automatic button holes, but she hates jersey,and can be tempremental when it comes to chiffon. Not the Singer.
she is just a joy, and I'm soo happy, and she sounds WONDERFUL! A real audio memory of my mother and grandmother, it was at their knees that I learned my craft.

Of course Levi wanted to know why I was on my knees and was it play time? look at that tail go!!

He couldn't quite understand the excitement, but felt he should be included anyway, especially as he spends his days 'guarding ' me whilst I sew

So recently I discovered Pinterest(if you would like an invite just send me your e-mail and I will send one to you) .
It wonderful , full of inspiring pictures of all sorts of PRETTY THINGS, but I have noticed a very worrying stream.
THE "FITNESS INSPIRATION".

Now I am far from fit or skinny, and very much an advocate of healthy eating etc, but I find it so tragic that the pictures below, seem to be most popular forms of body wish list.
I am NOT HAVING A GO AT THESE WOMEN, JUST THE IDEA THAT SOOO MANY WOMEN FEEL THAT THIS IS THE ONLY BODY THEY WILL BE HAPPY IN.
For so many YOUNG woman to think that this is what a grown up woman looks like is scary.
These are women who spend a large amount of time working out, and it is so unobtainable by most women.

What worries me most is that we are constantly talking about how awful it is that our young girls , anything from 8-10year olds and sometimes younger, are so worried about diet and being thin, yet it is US, the supposed grown up women who are STILL beating ourselves up if our body doesn't look like that of a 10yr old girl!! no wonder they are so frightened to grow up and become women as they constantly hear /see grown women being so unhappy with there bodies.

Don't we all remember being girls at family gathering and the the cutting, but joking and well meaning comments made from aunties, mothers, grandmothers etc about , "being a little chubby "or "no boobs yet then".
If we remember , why do we think the young girls around us today do not hear us and our constant comparisons and comments about celebrity woman or just the woman getting on the bus.They hear and digest and then turn it on themselves whilst looking in the mirror. they learn what being a woman is by looking around them and seeing YOU! we expect children to ignore the influences of the media, whilst showing that we can't.

It's time we grew up , and stopped beating ourselves up for not looking like a :
a) Disney princess
b) celebrity /model who's job it is to look like that and has all day to work out and have diets delivered!
c) an adolescent hairless boy!!

muscle matters? so does eating!! is it just me that finds this before and after sooo wrong, and beautiful young girl ends up looking... well like that!!

the following images all had comments attached along the line of , "perfect body", "what to aim for", I'm sure they are lovely women, but look like they are missing something, the softness of body.

I have just finished reading this book, and I'd recommend it to EVERYONE. I've driven the quiet scotsman mad, doing donkey snort laughing. and " listen to this....". for the 3 days It's taken to read it.

are you bemused by all the "rules" of being a woman today? this book will reassure you that you're NOT mad, OR ALONE, if you find all the " should do" things rather rediculous and the reasons why.
